St. Mary's Appoints AD David Petroziello as Men's Basketball Coach
Aug 31, 2010, 10:24 pm

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Exciting changes continue at St. Mary’s University College in anticipation of the school’s transition to the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.  St. Mary’s took a strong step to solidify its men’s basketball program by appointing Director of Athletics David Petroziello as Head Coach. This appointment of an experienced and well-qualified coach is another example of St. Mary’s commitment to making the transition to ACAC a smooth and successful one.

Petroziello takes over a program which has been consistently successful in the Alberta Colleges Athletic League, but which has struggled to establish itself as a legitimate option at the next level in the run-up to the 2012 ACAC entry date.

Petroziello’s experience is extensive and wide-ranging, and includes stops at different colleges in Quebec as well as in the professional ranks in Canada and overseas. Most recently spending a year coaching in Australia, previous postings also include General Manager and Head Coach of the Vancouver Titans professional basketball team (IBL) as well as Assistant Coach at Simon Fraser University (CIS). Petroziello also spent time in India working the national team program, where he led a 4 week training camp for athletes and coaches.

With the fall semester just around the corner, Coach Petroziello is already at work on recruiting and strengthening his roster of players for the upcoming season. All individuals interested in St. Mary’s Lightning basketball are encouraged to contact him directly for more information.

He can be reached at 403-254-3728 / david.petroziello(at)stmu.ab.ca

Megan Rainford-St. Michaels 3A High School Pincher Creek

Playing for Coach Peron during the Shooting Stars Showcase All Star Game Meagan did many good things to convince Coach Peron she was worth speaking to with respect to coming to St. Marys this fall.

“Megan was named a first team all-star with the Chinook Basketball League and has been a team captain for her grade 11 and 12 seasons. Megan was a key component in the Dragons perfect league record 14-0, south zone championship and bronze medal finish in provincials in the 2009 / 2010 basketball season. Meagan averaged 8 pts per game along with 3 steals, 3 assists and 4 rebounds per game this past season. Red Jacket Premier Girls Improvement The Best
Jun 25, 2010, 4:55 pm

Playing against many Calgary Club Teams that have been selected during high school season along with teams that have been together for 2-3 season Red Jacket Premier Girls provd they can play with anyone after a few months together. Last night Red Jackets played againt the much hyped Storm Elite 1 Team a team that has been together for a few seasons and have traveled many times to the states for high level tournament experience. Red Jackets game plan was simple-neutralize their 2 point guards as best as they can along with breaking down their press. The Red Jackets did both and with that they were able to compete with Storm Elite 1 for the entire game with Storm leads never more than 10 pts. With only 7 players on their bench, Red Jackets took it to the Selects and as the 4th quarter began saw them trail 51-41. With their own Swarm Style of defense and quick Suns transition points Red Jackets outscored Storm 14-9 and closed the gap to within 5 pts. Time however ran out on the Red Jacket Premier Girls and fell 60-55. A great acheivement as Storm tends to run all over their opponents with lop-sided scores. Red Jacket Premier Girls won 5 out of their last 6 games and developed a team chemistry that will continue this fall and next spring summer as the team is intended to staying together like other club teams have done. Player of the game went to both Melissa Bass and Vicki Nieto for their continuous Swarm Defensive pressure on the Storm 2 point guards. Kristin Ford scored 12 points along with 15 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and 3 steals. Nerissa Quinn also hit for 12 pts, 8 rebounds and Oliva Fischer had a season high 9 points. After some family summer fun the team intends to get together for Red Jacket Fall sessions to get ready for their high school season. Anyone else interested in joining the club contact Head Basketball Coach Randy Peron at 403-827-7526.
